Water-based activities

School residentials Anderton Centre water activities

Kayaking, Canoeing, Sailing, and Raft-Building is glorious fun!  Thanks to working in partnership with United Utilities, our charity-run centre has exclusive use of the sheltered 2km Lower Rivington reservoir with its excellent water quality and magnificent views of Lever Park and Rivington Pike.  You could well think that you’re in the Lake District, rather than 20-30 minutes from Preston and Bolton and around an hour from Manchester and Liverpool.

See how fabulous our place is and watch this brilliant video made by West Lancs Scouts when they brought 300 young people along for a weekend in September 2014.

Different water-activities have varying ratios of instructors to participants (in brackets).

Paddlesports is the collective name for canoeing and kayaking. We run a variety of courses, from fun, introductory sessions to British Canoe Union (BCU) awards and team development, all run by experienced BCU coaches. Canoes are open topped craft and carry one or two people, ideal for promoting team work and communication. Kayaks are closed cockpit craft that take one person. Typical introductory sessions consist of instruction in basic paddle strokes as well as team games.

Open-rafted canoes (1:12)

Open-rafted Canadian canoes

Open-rafted canoes are fun all year round with the right protective gear on

By rafting together two Canadian canoes, our open-rafted canoeing is ideal for team-building and school multi-activity days as they hold groups of 4-6.  Even better, they can be run as a ‘stay dry session’ in colder months, so students can experience this amazing stretch of water in colder months as well as in spring/summer. All of our multi-activity School residentials include this session, as we can pack lunches in them and campfire and bush craft kit, so can be off canoeing all day and cook lunch around a campfire next to secret lagoons, or eat lunch ‘on the beach’ or ‘at the castle’.

Sailing (1:8)

Sailing RYA training centre anderton centre chorley bolton lancashire The Anderton Centre is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accredited training centre.   Pictured are Pico sailing dinghies, each carrying 1 (or 2 small) people. During an introductory session participants can expect to learn basic sailing skills and try out sailing on the reservoir. All our sailing activities are run under the guidance of RYA qualified instructors.  Click here for RYA courses through the year.

 Raft-Building (1:12)

Improvised Raft-Building chorley lancashire bolton anderton centre team buildiing Also known as Improvised Rafting, Raft-Building is great fun and encourages both team-building and leadership within your group. Using barrels and wooden poles you will make your own craft and attempt to take it across the water.  Great for team games, schools and corporate away days.

A typical 2.5 hour session means you have time for one water-based activity from this list.  However, if you can stay all day, why not combine it with two land-based activities in the morning?   Get in touch for sample programmes – we can have up to about 80 on the water at once, so for a multi-activity day you can bring a group of 160 per day.
