British Canoeing 1 Star Award


The British Canoeing 1 Star Award is a sheltered water award which can be taken in any craft.

It is designed to recognise the level people would typically reach after an introductory course of six hours quality water time.

Course Content:

This 1 day course will typically run from 9.00am – 4.00pm and cover the  1 star syllabus

Pre-course requirements:

Candidates must be water confident, and ideally should be able to swim (this is desirable but not essential).

If candidates are under 14 the Paddlepower (Go Canoeing/Skills Building/Paddlepower) program may be more appropriate.


This is a practical course and a lot of time will be spent spent on the water.  All specialist kit * will be provided.

  • *Wetsuit /drysuit
  • *Canoeing cag
  • *Buoyancy aid
  • *Helmet
  • Wetboots / trainers that will get wet
  • Swimwear and towel
  • Warm clothes
  • Hat
  • Flask
  • Any medication you require
