Kids can spend the holidays exploring the water and woodland with nature walks around the Rivington and Adlington area and canoe trips on Lower Rivington Reservoir, or discover their adventurous side with exciting activities like Raft Building, Archery and Abseiling on site at the Anderton Centre.

Water-based outdoor activities

1309a567An accredited RYA training centre, our charity-run outdoor learning centre has exclusive use of Lower Rivington reservoir for sailing, kayaking, canoeing and raft-building. At approximately 2km long, it’s the largest body of water for sailing and leisure in Lancashire; within an hour’s journey from Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside.

Outdoor adventurous activities in stunning woodland for junior nature detectives and adrenalin-seekers alike! Archery, campfires, den-building, orienteering and bush craft are ideal for little ones with curriculum links for boosting  learning outside the classroom.

Abseiling, low ropes, mountain biking, problem-solving and crate stack (think ‘human Jenga’!) are great ice-breakers and team-building challenges ideal for INSETs and team-building away days in the North West.  Click here for the full list of activities.

Roped activity woman looking up and happyOur fully qualified Outdoor Instructors are highly experienced running away days designed to get the most out of your team.  Personal development, leadership, change management, communication skills, team work and problem solving are all outcomes for bespoke away-days.

With four meeting rooms and an in-house catering team, we can offer relaxed meeting spaces, catered lunch then get outdoors for a team-building afternoon.


Our 20 ensuite bedrooms sleep up to 70.  Ideal for youth or community groups, primary school residentials, GCSE PE or revision weekends or NGB courses.

The Anderton Centre & Lancashire Outdoor Activities Initiative

The Organisation
The Lancashire Outdoor Activities Initiative is a fantastic regional charity whose mission is to encourage the beneficial use of the outdoor environment, particularly young people and community groups, through participation in a growing range of water and land based residential and day visit outdoor learning activities. Operations are currently primarily based at the Anderton Centre with sole access to the Lower Rivington Reservoir, near Chorley in Lancashire. The Centre boasts an up to date 70 bed accommodation wing, excellent conferencing and training facilities plus a wonderful lakeside frontage with boathouse. The Centre now hosts over 11,000 visits per year with guests taking part in a wide range of outdoor activities, team personal development and other high quality training programmes.
The organisation is now seeking an accomplished leader and manager who can successfully consolidate the financial position of the organisation and provide support to the team and further enhance the quality of the Lancashire Outdoor Activity Initiative offering in line with the strategic plan.  For more information and job description Click here
